Why The gap we kept falling into
A good gaming PC already has the hardware.
Dedicated movie servers start in the thousands and play only what their own store sells. File players are affordable, but they stop at files. Living-room game launchers are built for games and leave film to chance.
A PC can do all of it. What it lacks is one calm, controller-first shell that makes it behave like an appliance: the right renderer, refresh rate, HDR state and audio route, without you reaching for a keyboard. That shell is Vesper.
Principles How it is built
Four rules we build by.
- Conduct
- Vesper drives proven playback engines instead of replacing them, so each one runs the way its authors intended.
- Fall back
- If one engine cannot play a title, another takes over. The aim is that no single part can strand movie night.
- Stay neutral
- Vesper ships with no sources and no store. What you watch is what you bring.
- Stay local
- Your library, resume points and settings live on your machine and can be exported.
Who The people behind it
Built by people who wanted this at home.
Vesper is an independent project. It started as one living-room PC and a list of everything that should have just worked.
